Back in Baja BABY! We are loving the warmer weather and fish tacos; of course.

Crossed the border at Calexico/ Mexicali crossing. Border patrol was very nice and helpful. walking us to each office and telling us exactly where to go,and with a smile. I like coming into this country. Unfortunately we don't welcome foreigners the same way when they enter ours.

We had to get a temporary vehicle import since we are crossing onto the mainland and not just traveling through Baja. A deposit of $200 which I'll get back upon leaving the country with my vehicle. We did have a little trouble finding this office which was about a 20 min. drive from the border. After almost crossing back into the U.S.A. at the other border crossing at the east end of town we found the correct office. So if you are planning on crossin. The first of many Military check point made my day. As he's checking our van he sits down in the back seat, looks around and says " this is beautiful." I think that's the first time anyone said our van is beautiful. I love this country!

Just crossed maybe the most remote part of Baja, The Desierto Vizcaino. Really neat cacti, rocks and mountains. Looks like something out of a Dr. Suess book.

We have had some amazing camp spots right on the water, from the Sea of Cortez to the Pacific ocean. One of my favorites was the La Jolla in Ensenada. Upon check in the host gave us a bottle of wine, 4 fresh pollo tamales, and a xmas card as a Christmas gift! The camp spot was right on the Pacific ocean with hot showers and only $12.

Which means no fan= hot=mosquitos=no sleep.

Riding now through tea plantations. Everything is getting lush and green. Still hot.

We needed a couple of days off riding. Butt breaks mostly.

8-9 April 2013 Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary

We took a jeep “safari” through this wildlife sanctuary where there are supposed to be wild elephants and the famous one horned rhino. They are quickly becoming extinct due to poachers killing it for the magical horn which grosses mass amounts of money in Chinese medicine. We woke up at 430 am to see these magical creatures. It was well worth it about 25 minutes into the park we saw 2 rather large rhinos in the tall grass. we stopped and watched until they came out to cross the road. We were in the jeep and Paul was taking photos and for some reason the flash kept going off. I do not think they like it so they started to come towards the jeep. These guys are HUGE and literally made of armor. not something you want to cuddle with. we slowly stared to move forward and they seemed happy with that and then kept on there way. We got a couple of good shots of them. We also saw plenty of peacock and peahens. The cocks strutting there stuff for the hens. Wild elephant and barking dear (which I think they have confused with another type of dog;)

Work it. Barking Deer or Dogs?

bike 4 lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11111774796930762514noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7053356760563615178.post-32070062951456989682013-04-06T10:01:00.001-07:002013-04-06T10:01:27.626-07:00Bihar

April 3 Gorakhpur-muzzaffarpur 266km

Arrived in the new state of Bihar. Said to be one of the poorest in the country and by the looks of things I would say its verry poor. Some very huge potholes for a couple of hours today. Its very slow going now. All everything backs up bumper to bumper. Cops tried to stop us today during the slow going crater sized hole road section. They were flagging us down but we just kept going and as usual they did not chase after us. Got sprayed with cow shit from a Lori truck in of me. Makes it worse that last week I turned to look at something and my visor flew right of my helmet. Camilles flew off the same day. Well you get what you paid for. They were on 12 us dollars.

April 4 Muzzaffarpur-Araria 245km

WOW the wind is CRANKING today. Blowing us and sand all over!! The wind does have a positive effect though. Its making it feel not as hot as the last few days of riding. Good thing we have lots of practice riding in wind. Its very windy, but we have ridden in worse down on route 40 in Patagonia last year. The sand storm we were riding in today was a new one for us. You know it’s a real sandstorm when it starts to shade out the sun. Its dancing all over the road so much it starts to put you in a hypnotic state. Its like when you start to focus on the actual rain drops on your helmet visor instead of the road when its raining. Still no one puts on their headlights. The only time they use headlights during the day is when they are riding down a one-way road the wrong way. I really think our air filters need a cleaning now We do however get about 110 miles per gallon. Camille's Hero Krishna seem to get a little better mileage than my Pee-Wee.

Passed two Cops on a bike today. They pulled back up to the side of me and flagged me over. I looke them over and they not only are real cops but they have guns instead of sticks(like usual),and are on wheel instead of foot. I decided that yes its time to pull over. There English is very little and my Hindi is just about nothing. They say” where you from?” and “whats in the bags?” I ssay “Problem?” Then one pulls out his wallet and we are thinking they want money. Nope he pulls out a passport photo of a white girl with brown hair. He then motions for Camille to pull down her scarf. He looks at the picture and then Camille and gives us the head bob that means OK. We start the bikes and hit the road. Well that went a lot smoother than I thought it would. Didn’t have to give them IDs or Money.

bike 4 lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11111774796930762514noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7053356760563615178.post-51143794026317976862013-04-03T10:43:00.001-07:002013-04-03T10:43:09.708-07:00HOLI. TAJ. ELEPHANT.adventures!
26-28 MARCH 2013 Jaipur, Rajasthan India

ELEPHANT FESTIVAL AND HOLI 2013

We decided to take a detour and go to the deserts of Rajasthan for the Elephant Festival. Sounds really neat, painted elephants parading around the streets, playing tug o war and polo. This year they switched things up a bit and let the elephants out of the festival? Thank you animal rights in India? We did not find this out until we were at the arena waiting for the elephants. We did see a lot of dancers there.

Next day was Holi. India’s festival of colors to celebrate and welcome spring. You pretty much just through color on each other and dance around. Everybody is COVERED in different colors.

29 March-30 March

Jaipur- Agra, Uttar Pradesh India 230 km

Arrived in Agra, Home of the Taj Mahal and it was closed! Every Friday. So that gave us the chance to see the Taj by sun rise the next day. It was beautiful. We have been to India many times and Paul has never been to visit the Taj. We went first thing in the morning and after waiting in line we walked right in while all the other tourists were outside still taking photos. WE got the whole place to ourselves. It really is a beautiful tomb. It attracts a lot of people a day.

We wanted to make some miles after that, pack up and headed east. Not much on the road as far as restaurants and hotels so we gathered some veggies and water and prepared to camp for the night. We stopped a little too early for India (you should set up camp late or else you get a lot of visitors) A lot of visitor we had. at least 20 men and children, workers of the fields around, watched us set up camp, make dinner, eat dinner and go to bed. At about 11pm a motorcycle pulled up followed by a truck. We did not know what was going on, villagers wanting to check us out? Nope. COPS. and all the villagers telling us to pack up and move to the school. We could not sleep there even though we asked all the villagers before. No way were we going to follow them to the school, Cops can not be trusted anymore then anybody else here. WE rode down the road at midnight in India, no hotels anywhere. so 20 minutes later we pulled off and set up camp with nobody around until 6:15am. What a long day.

31 March 2013 Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh India 168km

After last night we wanted to relax a bit. We found a hotel with a pool at the right price and a circus around the corner with a evening show. Sounds like a good time.

<img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; It was so refreshing. a few days ago we could not wait to get warm. Now we are looking for ways to cool off. So we got a late start due to the nice pool, rode for a couple of hours and prepared to camp for the night. Pulled onto a dirt road that lead behind some hills off the highway. found a nice flat spot to pitch our teepee up on the hill. minutes later we were getting visitors of course, very curious of what was going on. First man told us “night NO”. Ok? next man said, actually acted like a mean monkey coming to get us. Third man said there were Monkeys and snakes that come out of the hills at night and to follow him down to the flats to his farm where he has a room with a TV. Well we decided to listen so we packed up and pitched our “temple” as he called it outside his room, the room was too hat to sleep in. A couple hours later he sent a night watchman who checked the fields for hours for monkeys to make sure we were safe. No money wanted and no English spoken.

24 March 2013 Jaipur, India 80 KM

Arrived in the “Pink City” of Jaipur today. Coming in we got into more traffic, More Camels and Elephants on the road. Riding by these elephants a crazy feeling. Huge creatures that could trample me in a second and I am riding along side of them a lot of them. WOW! That is why we are here. ELEPHANT FESTIVAL.

Our SAFE camp spot

Our visitors in the morning.

Night watchman.

Watch out they spit.

ELEPHANTS!

Arriving at the Pink City.
bike 4 lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11111774796930762514noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7053356760563615178.post-14582613448051199022013-03-22T21:14:00.001-07:002013-03-22T21:14:48.407-07:00Oh India

March 21 Hoshiapur-Karnal 275km

Started off this morning with a beautiful road through the forest. Not one pot hole for 20 km. covered a lot of ground today. The apple, pine trees, and pot have slowly transitioned to rice fields and eucalyptus trees. Monkeys are gone now too. Saw a Lori truck that lost his rear axle then flipped over and spilled all of his goods. Crossing between the freeways today a dad and his two kids dumped their bike in front of me. He hit his front brake to hard on the dirt and it slid out on them. He looked at me and I looked at him. they got back on their bike and took off. Camille says I nearly got hit twice today, but I didn’t notice either one being anything out of the norm.

March 22 Karnal- Reari 211 km

Got a late start because our room was so so nice we stayed till noon. Started off today riding down the wrong way on a one way road. this is totally normal here. The lights on the bikes here have a left hand index finger button for flashing your light. You just alternate between the horn and the light and its all good. You are never in the way of anything in India. Everything merges around. The biggest vehicle, and whoever is in front of you has the right of way here. It actually works better than you may think. the rice fields are now replaced with desert shrubs, sand and goats. Saw a camel pulling a huge cart of straw down the hwy. Made it through Delhi and now we are half way to Jaipur. Around sunset there was a group of people carrying an India flag and parading down the road. The first five or six men were totally nude?? What the?? Well it is India
bike 4 lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11111774796930762514noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7053356760563615178.post-2148726042176320302013-03-21T23:15:00.001-07:002013-03-21T23:15:30.225-07:00On our way to the Elephant Fest.

march 17 220 km manali –nagrota

Beautiful day riding along hwy 21. The road is the last mountain road before you hit the flats of india. You have the mountains over your throttle hand and the flat plains over your clutch hand. It made for a beautiful sunset. Camel dropped her bike doing a u turn today. She always gets so mad at herself. I tell her that its no big deal. She also had a man literally run into the side of her. Its really not safe to run in the streets here in india. Everything must move at a smooth steady pace or it just doesn’t work here. Just another day on India roads. Did I mention that my horn is so so LOUD, and it plays 18 different tunes. Things move out of my way when they hear me coming. Cant wait to bring one home for my bike.

march 20 Mcle ganj- hoshipur 130 km

Left the home of the Dali Lama and headed south today out of the mountains toward the fertile plains where everything grows including Mary Jane. roads today were full of turns and void of straights. fun riding really. The whole day you could smell and see Mary growing all along the road. The temps. are getting warmer now. Monkeys are lining the road waiting for some food to be thrown from bus windows. Passed a truck full of goods and people that had rolled down a switchback. People had stopped and were pulling up the wounded in blankets. some looked real bad off. Read in the paper the next day 3 died and 11 injured. That will make you want to ride a little slower.

bike 4 lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11111774796930762514noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7053356760563615178.post-89071548643919232852013-03-14T00:02:00.001-07:002013-03-14T00:02:59.808-07:00Catch up day. We arrived here totally different then how we had ever imagined it to be. One motorcycle left. Riding 2 up.(follow the white rabbit) 2 Volkswagen buses and 2 bicycles. (FYI What a small world it is. We had met the 2 cyclists on the Costa Rica/ Panama border last year and hooked up with them a few towns back this year..One of the bikes needed a little help getting to the end of the road) We all found a full house to share for a couple of days while we celebrated birthdays and our arrivals with new Mohawks and tattoos and started making plans for heading north, a direction none of us have gone in a long time.

We have encountered yet another time when you can’t believe what you hear. Everything that I have heard and read online says that its impossible to sell a motorcycle in Ushuaia Argentina. Yet again I have proven the masses wrong. I had money in my hand and no more wheels in less than 24 hours after arriving in town. The White Rabbit was sold in Ushuaia for 1,839 dollars. Not bad considering I paid $2,200 for it 5 years ago, and put 25,000 mile on it. I feel like I got my moneys worth. Without a doubt I’m sold on Honda bikes. Wow! what a strange feeling not having a bike anymore. It all happened so fast!!!.

Ushuaia is a beautiful little city. Since we have arrived here towards the end of the tourism season there seems to be less people around compared to how built up it is for tourism. It sure looks like 100% of their economy is tourism. We took the local ski lift up to do one last hike to a glacier. The color change is beautiful right now for it is autumn down at the end of the world red, orange, mahogany, Green,Brown, and White. You can see why Tierra Del Fuego is called the “land of fire” the colors were so bright it looked like the land was on fire. It brings all the elements together on our trip. A lot of RAIN, strong WINDS, beautiful EARTH/LAND seen and traveled and to arrive at the end, the “land of FIRE” ties it all together and balanced it all out. For sure It was all worth every mile, every rain drop, every motorcycle drop, every tear drop. Worth every breeze, wind gust, every smile, all the laughter. It was worth every mountain pass, every climb, every twist and turn, all the mud and gravel. Getting lost and then found again. Finding new friends, finding new paths, new ways and learning to love and BE in EVERY MOMENT.

THE last Ride.

Our new family who we will never forget.

Proud new owner of a very fast White Rabbit!!

Tierra Del Fuego island tattoos. The southern most road in the world and the end of the road for us. What an awesome road it has been.We have been through a lot. Rain, Hail,Snow Wind, Cold, Hot, Dirt, Gravel, Long, Short, Winding, straight. We have a bit of mixed emotions arriving here. We have been on the road towards here for a total of 8 months and 17,000 miles. In ways we feel that we have accomplished a goal. We have reached that destination and we have literally reached the end of the road. We are a bit sad to see that road end. Always heading in the same direction, South to Ushuaia. Someone once told us, “Don’t go north if you are headed south”. We have lived by that the whole way south So now the question? “What next”?. We always roll with what the road brings us. We’ll keep on keepin’ on with what life rolls out next.

We made it to Ushuaia 2 up on the White Rabbit. Down sized our load dramatically. It is amazing how little we can live with. It was still a little tight at times but luckily we like each other and we only had to be that way for about 300 miles. I had a hard time riding on the back after being in control of my own motorcycle. It was a different experience. We had a beautiful ride getting here the last few days. We arrived in Tierra Del Fuego, meaning the land of fire. We stopped and saw a small penguin colony of emperor penguins, the only ones in South America. We are not quite sure why they are here but for some reason they have left Antarctica and are now staying in Tierra Del Fuego. What beautiful birds. We were able to get really close to them, they do not seem to be scared of human presence. What a beautiful, once in a life time experience. We have had a lot of these experiences and we are grateful and always in awe with everyone of them.

Tierra del Fuego. She had a good strong run. She ran farther and saw more than any other 1995 KLR 250. She fell short by about 380 miles to her destination. She will be missed.

We took her to the local mechanic to make sure if we could replace the rocker arm that the rest of the engine would still alright. We found that one of the exhaust valves was bent and unmovable. It would take a lot of time,(which we are running out as it’s turning to winter) to find all the parts if we could even find them for this rare bike in this part of the world. After much deliberation we decided that the best thing was to try and sell her as is. We were able to sell her in a few hours to a local who thought that he might be able to bring her back after a lot of time and love. Maybe with a whole new engine. He had the time to do it and had a daughter to give it to. I’m happy that the shooting star is going to another girl. She is a girls bike that only a true women can handle. I hope that one day she will fly again.

Luckily We still have the strong White Rabbit that we can both ride for the 380 miles left to Ushuaia and 2 awesome VW buses that can hold my gear. We are still south bound and enjoying what the road brings with it.

Just some of the great times she had with us.

This photo is from her last ride!

Bye Bye Shooting Star.

Handing over the keys to the Shooting Stars new owner.
bike 4 lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11111774796930762514noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7053356760563615178.post-45362588118845533712012-03-20T09:50:00.001-07:002012-03-20T09:50:59.641-07:00Amazing Patagonia

March 13 2012

Perito Moreno Glacier- El Calafate Argentina

Today were rode into The Glacier National Park in Argentina with our friends Simon, MC, Jason, Angela, and Bode. It was a nice change of pace to actually sit back in the VW bus and have someone else drive for a change. The ride was about an hour of beautiful scenery. We decided to have all the girls in one bus and the boys in another. The Moreno Glacier flows to the valley floor where it meet the lake. We stayed here at the glacier all day long until the park closed. You never get tired of watching a 90 foot wall of ice come crashing down into the lake. For sure it was one of the most spectacular thing that we have ever seen. Just another one of those moments when you really feel small in this giant planet we call earth. Everyone should witness this sometime in their lives.

March 15 2012

El Calafate Argentina-Torres del Paine area Chile

167 miles mostly dirt.

Today the caravan was up and moving again. We have heard that the short cut way of hwy. 40 was suppose to be one of the worst sections of road in all of Argentina. So of course we must go that way and check it out for ourselves because its hard to take anyone's advice as everyone has a different view on things. As it turns out it is actually one of the best dirt roads that we have been on in quite a long time. If not the best one of the whole trip. Goes to show you that you have to go and see for yourself and not really listen to other. We are usually pretty good at doing this so it wasn't to far out of the norm for us. We stopped for lunch at a small river for a lunch break. Simon tried his luck at fishing while I made a hot dog cooker out of an empty beer can that I strapped to my muffler.(Thanks for the idea Kris).

Now it was time to cross the boarder back over into Chile. This was a very small boarder on a very windy dirt road. It was the smoothest boarder crossing ever for us. It went so fast for all of us it was kind of a surprise. After the boarder we headed towards Torres del Paine park. We stopped short of the park because we found a great camping spot on a lake with an awesome view of the peaks.

March 16 2012

Torres del Paine national park Chile

23 miles o dirt

Today we woke up to heavy clouds, light rain, and never without our friend the WIND. Our plan of hiking in the park was out today and it was time to find some kind of a shelter out of the rain and wind. We entered the park and went to a camp ground with a shelter to pitch our tent under out of the weather.

March 17 2012

Torres del Paine park

This morning we woke up to a beautiful blue bird day. These days seem to be few and far between anymore and we decided to take full advantage of the day and go for a hike. Simon,MC, and Camille and I drove to the other side of the park for our hike. We hiked just about what seemed like all day. 18 kms towards the famous spires of Patagonia. The walk was beautiful, but as some may know I'm not much a walker and it was a little farther than I usually like to go. This is the end of the busy season here and I still could not believe how many people we passed on the trail. At least 100. I would really hate to be here here during the busy season. No wonder the trail is so wide here. None the less it was a wonderful day and good to get out and get some exercise and fresh mountain air.

March 18 2012

Torres del Paine- Puerto Natales, Chile

100 miles of windy dirt roads

We pulled into town today and saw that one of the buses had a flat tire again due to the rough rocky road. The spare was already used due to a blowout on a rough road a couple of days earlier. All the tire shops were closed because it is Sunday. The other bus we are with stayed behind to do some fishing. So now we don’t have a tire or a way to get one fixed. So Paul and I decide to drive a around and look for a room close by. As we were looking around we were being chased by a lot of dogs. I Gunned the shooting star to try and scare off the dogs and then heard an explosion. I got off my bike and saw oil all in places oil should not be. We pushed the bike towards the gas station to the bus with the flat tire. We had to push the bike up a hill to a hotel room and started pulling it apart. We found chunks of metal missing from the top engine cover. We pulled that off and saw that one of the screws was missing from the valves and the other two valves had completely broken off with some pieces missing down in the engine. We are now trying to figure out if this is a fixable problem. Being that there or few if any other KLR 250 down here it is hard to get parts. We will see in a couple of days.

March 19 2012

Today we went around town to find out the bad news about our shooting start. The valve rocker is so different than all the others that the part is not available here in Puerto Natales, or maybe not at all here in Chile. Klr’s are not a common bike down here and klr 250’s are even more rare. He also says there is no shop around here to get a new one machined. The mechanic says you should be on a Honda. We will try and get the “falling star down to the next city which is 100 miles away. Punta Arenas is a city of a few hundred thousand people and we may have better luck there. If nothing works out there for us we may continue 2 up on the White Rabbit for the last 250 miles to Ushuaia”the end of the World”

Simon riding the roof.

Perito Moreno Glacier.

Our Crew.

Hwy. 40 cooked dog. Wind, Rain and Friends.

7 March 2012

125 miles of dirt Cuevas de los Manos

Today we visited the cave of hands. A “cave” that displays 9300 year old paintings of hands. Made by putting their hands on the walls and them blowing the paint out of their mouths leaving outlines of hands all over the cave.

Leaving the cave there were 2 VW Buses in the parking lot, one with California plates the other with plates from Chile. After talking a little we waved goodbye and said see you down the road.

The next town we came to ,Bajo Caracoles, to get gas was out of fuel and the two buses and us all needed fuel. The gas station owner said the next fuel truck was due to arrive in 15 to 30 days. Now I know we are not really in a hurry here, but that is just a little too long for us to wait around. The next town that hopefully has fuel was 140 Miles south. We all luckily had a little fuel that we have been carrying but knew that it was cutting it close to get to the next town. We all decided to ride together just in case any of us needed a little help getting down the road.We had to camp out a little while down the road for it was getting late and dark. The buses made for an excellent wind block for the bikes and our tent.

8 March 2012

92 Miles of gravel

We all made it to, Gobernador Gregores, the next fuel station! but they do not have any fuel until 4pm. We go into town make lunch with plans to fuel up at 4 and hit the road. At 330pm they say no gas until 8pm. Well we can not go anywhere. We set up camp and waited…at 8pm they have gas and a line and they are rationing gas to $100 pesos per vehicle. Motorcycles are full along with all the extra containers but the buses had to make a couple of trips through the line.

9 March 2012

186 Miles total. 102 of deep deep gravel.

El Chalten

Full of fuel we all hit the road again and decide to ride a little farther together for we all seem to be traveling at about the same pace. So we are now 2 Motorcycles, 2 Volkswagen's, 7 People and a whole lot of fun and a new kind of adventure. We never thought we would be the same speed as the VW vans but it all works out.

A lot of Gravel road today Thick gravel that just pulls the bike all over the road. One bus had a tire blow out and another had a rear shock break. So it was a rough road today and we were all happy to arrive at a town where the road turns to pavement but still no fuel at the station.

The next town El Chalten has fuel but at a much higher price. El Chalten is a beautiful mountain town with huge glaciers, crystal rivers and lakes, granite spires and trout. We decide it is time to catch some fish.

10 March 2012

We drove past the town today and camped by the river with high hopes to catch some fish and have a big fish fry. With Paul’s second cast he hooked a small trout. Big enough to keep and eat. Wow that was fast we now have really high hopes. That was the only fish that was caught that day.

11 March 2012

Woke up with rain. Our favorite. instead of ride in it today we all decide to hike in it! We hiked up to one of the glaciers nearby. a short wet hike. It did clear so we were able to get a good view of the glacier. Rode back to town to dry out all of our gear.

12 March 2012

130 miles

El Chalten-El Calafate, Argentina

Still headed south. Since we can not decide what is worse to ride in, strong wind or rain we got them both today at the same time. Gotta love Patagonia! This pass that we rode over today was like none of the rest that we have crosses so far. At the bottom it was a lush rainforest with fern leaves bigger than our motorcycles. Halfway up the pass we entered what looked like a forest full of giant oak trees. The forest floor was void of vegetation. As far as you could see it was just gravel. Towards the beginning I thought”wow they really use a lot of gravel on this road during the winter”, then I started to look around more and the gravel was everywhere throughout the forest as well. Very very crazy looking place. I’ve never seen anything like it before. At the top of the the pass giant peaks are poking out of the above tree line gravel. Today was the first day in quite a while that we didn't get rained on. It was a very beautiful day of riding. Oh yeah today I also bought a new pair of hiking boots. My old one’s were getting my feet to wet and stinking really really bad. Camille bought a pair of fishing waders to keep her dry, as her rain gear couldn’t handle the load anymore. Thanks for that idea Julie. The waders are working so good I think I’m going to get me a pair also.

March 3. 23 miles

Bariloche Argentina

We have an amazing 2 story room overlooking the lake here. Full kitchen and everything! The whole side of the room is windows from top to bottom. Today we woke up to blue sky's and sunshine. This has been a rare thing in our lives lately. We decided to take advantage of it and go for a hike in some of the beautiful basalt spires around the area. So we rode up to the ski area outside of town. WOW what a great looking place to ski. SO so many lifts with good looking terrain. Above tree line as well as tree skiing. Kind of with it was winter here now. We hiked up the area a bit for a better view. Skiing around spires sure would be fun. They did have some downhill mountain biking here but since it is towards the end of their summer season all the rental shops were already closed. After we left the ski area we took a little dirt road around towards yet another lake where we hiked to a small waterfall.

March 4th 190 miles

Bariloche-Esquel Argentina

Started on the famous route 40 today. Route 40 runs the whole length of Argentina, from top to bottom. A lot of the highway is unpaved and sometimes we ride next to the fresh new pavement they are still working on.

We got to test out the fishing waders today and they worked great. I look silly but I am DRY. Paul still needs to work on his system. Just after the rain stopped the wind started. Gusts, blowing us all over the road. It is hard to ride in this because you are constantly fighting the wind in every direction. Have to love being out in all the elements on the motorcycle.

5 March Esquel Argentina- camping on road side.

180 Miles

Windy again today. Not as bad as yesterday but still windy. Had to find a camp spot on the side of the road out of the wind. This is very hard to do out here, as there are no trees. The town we wanted to stop in was very weird and I do not think they liked motorcyclist or maybe just us. Nobody would rent us a room. They said they were full but there was nobody around the whole town. Just a really creepy place that reminded us of the Twilight Zone. So we got the heck out of there and camped out on the side of the highway.

6 March

214 Miles

road side-Puerto Moreno, Argentina

We must fuel up whenever can because the towns are few and far between and sometimes, or most of the time, the stations do not have fuel. So get it where you can. We ran into a couple other Motorcyclists at the one gas station. Jay from Canada on a 1200 BMW. 2 guys from Santiago, Chile. We rode with them most of the day. They are on the fast train and after 240 miles they wanted to keep riding until dark. Paul and I said that was good for us and stayed in town. The Chileans only had 6 more days of their vacation and had ground to cover. We are on the slow train.

<img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; Who would have taught we would meet a fellow Stanleite down here in Patagonia Chile. Julie is down here doing some fly fishing for a couple of weeks. She also gave us some very valuable information on where we wanted to go. The first place we were headed is under serious protesting. The roads are closed, there is no fuel, and no gas. Guess we are on to our second choice. Well the second one fell through also due to an erupting volcano. Its all under smoke and ash now. Both of these towns you have to take a ferry to from Puerto Montt. Puerto Montt is at the bottom of Chile where it starts to break up into thousands of islands. The only other choice we have now is to cross the boarder back over to Argentina. We’ve gone as far south in Chile as possible at this point in time. Thanks Julie for the valuable information.

After breakfast it was time to head 30 miles back to Puerto Varas to look for a mechanic to fix Camille’s stripped out oil drain screw hole. The first little shop we found took care of us right on the spot. It did take 15 minutes to explain to him what was actually wrong with the bike. After I was able to turn the screw with my fingers he suddenly got it. He then threaded in some new threads, sent his son to the store for a new bolt, cut it down to size and now its as good as new. 10 dollars is what he asked for. We felt like he just saved our lives so we gave him 15. When people find out that you have ridden your motorcycle from the states to here they seem to be a lot nicer to you. I really don’t think I can explain it. They give you this look like your crazy and are more willing to help you out. After this was all finished I went and tried my luck at some fishing. Every time we say this It ends up raining and cold and this time was no different! Dark clouds, wind and rain all day. made the best of it. Put our rain gear on and found some warm drinks and still hung out on the beach. Still got wet, just in a different way then expected.

Chinese circus was in town so we went and dried out under the Big Tent. Always entertaining in every country.

The storm did not calm down in the night. Rained, blew and thundered like mad all night long. We stayed dry in the tent but it was a restless night due to the fierce wind.

25 February 2012

Villarrica, Chile (Lake district)

12 miles Dry out day!

We went to town to pull everything out and hang dry it in a nice dry cabana for the day. We have found that in most of the towns we visit in Chile the Cabanas are cheaper than the hotel rooms. Much bigger with fully stocked kitchen so cooking is much nicer compared to our one burner unleaded fuel stove (on the bathroom floor), and the meals more colorful.

26 February 2012 CELEBRATE LIFE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY SMELLIN!

“Who the ell is Hellen”

Conaripe, Chile (lake district)

85 miles HOT SPRINGS.

More rain today so we wanted to take advantage of the MANY hot springs here. So many due to the numerous active volcanoes in the area. Beautiful setting. Lush forests and waterfalls. Some natural pools built right along the river and some wooden pools (think a bigger boat box friends). Really beautiful setting to bad all the pools were just a little cooler than bath water and the rain did not help. We did not stay to long. We got out and put our rain gear back on to go try to find a spot to dry out again. Again we found a Cabana. Wood stove this time and dried EVERYTHING out so nicely. AAWWWH!

27 February 2012

125 miles

Osorno, Chile

After many days of the KLR shooting star running a little rough. Dying while stopping, would not idle with out giving it a lot of gas, missing out and just running rough. Not shooting, but more like farting. We knew we needed to give her a little love. OK a lot of love. Oil change. Valve adjustment. Spark plug. Fuel filter. If all that doesn’t help we need to find more love. We wanted to get to a little bigger city just in case we needed some more supplies or help. We have been in small tourist towns for the past week. On our way to the bigger city climbing a small incline, cruising on the freeway the shooting star blew out some black smoke, slowing down and popping. She made it to the top of the hill, pulled over and she died… After a couple of minutes of heart pumping and kicking she started up again. We coasted down to the town below in the middle of nowhere. No hotels no services. We found a gas station with a cover(as it was raining,of course) and started pulling her apart. I really don’t like it, nothing I can do. Adjust the valves which are all tight, Pull out the spark plug and it is so corroded. maybe with a little salt?!?! (WOW that was a really great time out on the salt flats in BOLIVIA) Put a new plug in her. Piece her back together. She fires right up and sounds so much better, so much better. She is as good as new. Ride to the next town, in the rain, and find a dry spot for the night right before dark. Oh the adventure of it all. Never know what is going to happen around the corner or over the hill. As is life. gotta go with it, breath and go your own way.

28 February 2012

Ensenada, Chile

88 miles

Started riding just in time with the rain today. Found a nice cabana on the lake. Dried out again. Changed the oil in both bikes. We have a small problem now. Camille’s Shooting Start has a “somewhat” stripped out oil drain screw. We put plumbers tape around the screw thread and for now it’s not leaking. We now have to find a helicoil for it. It needs to be addressed before we hit the desolate hwy. 40 in Argentina. We will try to fix it really soon. They are running smooth now though. About 28907 on the bikes and 4141 since we left Cusco Peru 2 months ago. still headed south, still raining and still loving every moment as wet as it might be. Love the adventure.

Our sweet camp spot on the lake BEFORE it started raining.

Our way to the hot spring BEFORE it started raining.

Our work shop. Which by the way was pretty confusing to say the least. Along the way we passed the highest peak in the southern hemisphere , as well as the western hemisphere. Aconcagua 6960 meters HIGH. It was a clear day and we could see just about the entire mountain except for the very top. What a beautiful day it was today. Clear sky's and big big peaks. Oh how we love the mountains. The boarder is at the top of the pass and Wow! it must be the most beautiful border so far. We just chilled in line with all the cars and flew Camille’s Kite while waiting in line. We actually had to do the boarder procedures twice. Don’t ask. The borders are suppose to be easier than Central America right?? So far it really has not been any easier for us. In Central both boarders are right next to each other and everything is close by. Here you can cross into Argentina and not get stamped in for another 15 miles??

21 Feb. 2012

Rio Blanco- San Fernando Chile 180 miles

Today was Agriculture riding down the main hwy. of Chile. Hwy. 5. Grapes,Grapes,Apples,Apples,Peaches,Peaches, and so on. Pretty flat and uneventful except for the fact that we are covering ground quick on this Hwy. Which is exactly why we are here. There are no roads that stay in the mountains here. They all just go east to west up and over the Andes criss-crossing from Argentina to Chile or the long and fast freeway north to south.

22 Feb. 2012

San Fernando-Salto de Laja Chile 223 miles

More freeway riding again today. Now the scenery is starting to change from fruits growing everywhere to huge tree farms for as far as the eye can see. Still pretty flat. The temps. are really good now though. Its not hot anymore and the days are starting to get longer. Tonight we camped on side of the Hwy. next to a little creek with some nice big shade trees. Oh and it was free camping, or “squatting”. This is nice because nothing is free or cheap down here.

23 Feb. 2012

Salto de Laja- Lago Villarrica Chile 190 miles

Well now the scenery is getting better. The road is starting to get hilly with some turns. Trees are everywhere now. We have just started to enter what they refer to as the Lake District of Chile. Today we have officially enter the Patagonia area. The lake Villarrica is big and very beautiful. There is a huge snow caped volcano in the, not so far, distance. It’s “touristy” here for a reason. Its very nice. Tonight we are at a pay campground with full amenities, We are right on the shores of the lake. Camille prepared a beautiful dinner once again. This one was with all local things. Redwine,Apples,Nectarines, cheese, crackers, basil, blueberries, and salami. Wow it was so so delicious. EAT LOCAL!

Aconcagua 6,960 meters. Hardly a turn in the road. Just fighting not to fall asleep. Today we pulled into town and caught the tail end of the biggest race of the year here in this desert town. Mountain bikes, Motorcycles, dune buggies, cars. everything was racing. We were able to see the last few cars finish. It was a huge race. so so many drunk people everywhere.

13 February 2012

20 Miles

Villa San Agustin

This morning while loading up the shooting star I noticed a screw loose on my Luggage rack. stared to screw it in just to realize the thread from the inside was stripped. The hotel owner had a drill and after a little time found a bit to drill through the frame of the bike. We put an extra long screw through. It is solid now.

After we were done with that it was late and HOT so we decided to stay another day. We rode around the desert and checked out some petroglyphs that you can see from the road.

14 February 2012

San Juan, Argentina

147 Miles

Arrived in wine country today. Right out of desert country with nothing to grape vines everywhere. I’m pretty excited about this.

15 February 2012

San Juan Argentina

Paul has been sick for 3 nights in a row. Bathroom issues. When he got up this morning and stared packing to leave I told him to just go back to bed because we are not going anywhere until we go to a pharmacy and he gets better. I found him some drugs that worked through out the day and by evening he was doing much better.

16 February 2012 HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL!

Mendoza, Argentina

116 Miles

All Paul wanted for his birthday was a Argentinian Steak as big as his face and new tires, front and rear for the Honda.

Finding a tire shop that quoted us $400 USD for 3 tires and still does not include instillation we kept looking. After checking a few more shops we found ALL tires are expensive here in Argentina and thought Chile would be even more expensive because everything else is in Chile. We got the Honda new front and rear tires and the KLR just a new front tire at a cost of $380 USD. CRAZY!

We went out to celebrate Paul Birthday that night. We had a really late big lunch so that steak would have to wait. We found the busy night street with tables an chairs lining the sidewalk. A great people watching spot. Sat down at the Irish pub and finally had some good Whisky! Happy Birthday Paul. We were celebrating!!

17 Feb. 2012 0 miles

Mendoza, Argentina

Today was a day for moto. Maintenance . It was time to try and find some new rear wheel bearings and a rear brake line. Yesterday someone told us where the Honda shop was, so that’s where we began. Luckilly they did have my rear wheel bearings, but not the brake line. Good the bearings are more important since the brake line has a slow leak and can still be manageable with a few pumps of the foot. The Honda shop sent us around the corner to the mechanic” Thulio”. He was quite the character. He had to tell us about every foriegners bike that he ever worked on. A very high energy funny guy. The first set of bearings from the shop was the wrong size. So we both walked around the corner to exchange them. The second set would not fit my old seals. So off he went on his moto. to find yet another set. Third times the charm.

Tonight we went out for my special b day dinner. After some reserch we found where the best steak in the country was suppose to be. “Don Marios.” I must say that the steak and the night was one of the nicest ever. Try and eat a steak that is 2 inches thick. No problem. It really does just melt and come apart in your mouth. By far the best Steak of my life. Cant forget the 2 bottles of really really great red wine.

18 Feb 2012

Maipu Argentina 40 miles

Today we had lunch in the middle of a beautiful vineyard under a huge shade tree. After lunch we did a tour of the winery. What a very informative tour. I tried some white wine that was actually really good. Luck would have it that we picked the vineyard that is all organic. They make a wine that is fully organic which has no added sulfides. so so tasty.

Today we camped out at a camp ground right in the middle of vineyards. They just told us at the vineyard that it rarely rains here in the desert. Well around 2 am. it started raining. It rained rained and rained hard most of the night. At around 430 am. Camilles motorcycle fell through the tent and onto me. Ripped a big hole in the tent. Lesson learned. When putting your bike around the tent make sure it is leaning out. Not IN!! Everything including us was soaking wet!!

19 Feb. 2012

Cacheuta, Argentina 45 miles

A very small village with a huge hot springs resort. It’s a holiday today and this place is so so busy we cant even fit into any of the pools that are hot. We get into one that is not allowed for kids. Its just not hot either. I turn up the hot water coming into the pool and we sit next to it for an hour. We ride down the road just a bit and pull over to camp for the night. I see someone go down to the river with a fishing rod. I decide to go have a look along the river. Once I reached the river bank I look down and to my surprise it’s the primitive hot pools that we have wanted all day long. What are the odds that we camped right across the street from some sweet hot pools.YEah!!!

<img style="background-image: none; I would have to agree. We decided to stay another day here and enjoy the swimming pool and things. Today we rode up some dried river beds and dirt roads. The scenery here is so beautiful we had to go explore some of it before heading onto Argentina. Red rocks and Balanced rocks are everywhere. If this was in the states it would for sure be a National Park area. We found a swweet spot for lunch under a large thorn tree. Crazy thing happened. It started raining late at night and it rained all all night long. That’s the first time we have seen the rain come down for hours and hours. Usually its short showers. The next day those dried river beds were raging rivers that you could boat down.

9-2-12 Tupazi-Humahuaca Argentina 160 miles

Today was boarder day. We try and figure its going to take up most of our day. A couple of guys we met last week told us it took them 7 hours here. It turns out we were only here for 1 hour. Everyone is going the opposite way of us. They all want to get into Bolivia and we want to get out. We arrived in a small village Humanhuaca. Its actually a tourist town because of the red rock cliffs here. Our first night in Argentina and our room actually has a heater???WOW!!

10-2-12 Humahuaca-Rosario de la Fronterra 240 miles of Hwy.

Well it feels good today to finally be able to cover some ground. I cant believe it!! At the gas stations they also sell food, oil, and ice cold beer. What a concept eh. Some people may not understand just how awesome this really is. It saves you hours. It is now so hot that we went from having heat in our room last night to now having A/C. The rooms here are more expensive, but you usually do get more for your money. Now we have been paying 30-45 dollars a night for a a room. The room tonight is a small chalet out in the country. We are starting to be able to tell that Argentina is much more together than any other country that we have visited thus far. Free filtered bottled water at the gas stations. WHAT?? Did I mention that the police don’t even stop you at any of the road blocks here so far. I think the riding here is more dangerous than anywhere we have been so far. The cars here absolutely fly, or go really really slow. Its pretty dangerous when they fly by doing 80+ miles and hour. Some cars are going 45 while others are doing 80+. In the past we are just about the fastest thing on the roads. Not so here!!!

11-2-12 Rosario de la Fronterra-valle de Catamarca 237 miles

Now we are in very tropical climates. Its almost 90 with tons of humidity. Along the road today is mostly sugar cane fields mixed in with tobacco. There is so so much sugar cane growing all over the Americas. Huge barns with tobacco hanging up drying. Toward the end of the day we did manage to get into a little different scenery. Now it seems we are starting to enter grape and olive country. so what do we do? Yep buy some local Malbec Vino and cheese stuffed olives for our wonderful dinner that Camille prepared for us. Our room tonight is the best so far. Its actually a full cabin with kitchen and all. It sure is nice to spread out all of our stuff for a change.

These are photo’s from our last day in Bolivia. An old silver mining town the\at used to be one of the wealthiest cities in the 1700’s. They have been mining this mountain for silver since then. It is still producing silver and being turned into swiss cheese, due to new tunnels still being created. We took a 5 hour tour of the mines, which 3 hours of it was in the mines. Miners are still working in there. They do not mind us being there for a couple of reasons. We brought them gifts. Coca Cola, Fanta soda and Coca leaves. They also like us to see the conditions they are working in to share with the rest of the world. Underground in the dark, needless to say, is unsafe working conditions. There is NO fresh air at all. Staying all day underground is a very tough job. Their life expectancy is around 40.

We were a little nervous to take a tour inside the mine. Being underground for 3 hours was longer than either one of us thought we could take.. It is all mind over matter. Just remember to breath what little dusty oxygen there is. We had to at time crawl through tunnels; climb layers of ladders to get out of holes; and walk through clay and water. We really enjoyed the opportunity in the end. Happy to experience it and really see first hand what it is like inside an operating mine. Happy to make it safely out.

4 February 2012 0 miles

Today was a day of chores. Since getting gas is such a problem here we decided to start getting it the day before. Cleaned the air filters today. Bought some veggies for cooking dinner and breakfast. Did a little laundry and a little blog updating.

5 February 2012.

130 Miles

Potosi- Uyuni Bolivia

Beautiful ride today. Finally the rain clouds were all around us instead of right on top of us. Dropped down into the desert. Really beautiful landscape red rocks and cacti. Headed toward the Uyuni Salt Flats, the largest flats in the world. You Can not get to Uyuni without riding dirt roads. It is the wet season so the dirt turned into slick mud in a lot of places. This is why we have dirt bikes, to have fun on the dirt. We have been really excited to see this place and ride out on it. When we arrived in town we meet 7 other motorcyclists, who just came back from a jeep tour because they did not want to bring there bikes on the salt due to the knee deep water at the entrance of the flats. We need to go see for ourselves.

6 February 2012

63 Miles of Dirt

Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia

Well we spent the first half of the day riding around for 3 hours trying to find the road to the salt flats. At one point the clay road was so so slick Paul’s bike slid out as he flew over the handlebars into a nice roll. Luckily it was soft clay with no cacti around and he and his bike were ok. It is desert and flat out here and there are dirt roads going everywhere in every direction. Getting directions in Spanish does not really help us. After ducking inside out of the rain and hail storm and taking a good long look at Google Earth we found our way out there in the late afternoon. Sure enough there was a lot of water on the flats turning it into a Salt Lake. We could see dry salt only a few hundred yards away. We decided to walk through it to see how deep it is. If it goes past Paul’s knee we do not go. The water is right under and we decide to go for it. What a dream like feeling. It feels as though you are riding in the sky for the flats are reflecting the sky above and at the same time riding on top of a calm lake. You can ride as fast as you like for it is flat and smooth with nothing around for miles. Really glad we did it only wish we had more time out there. The sun was setting and we had to make it back to town for a good motorcycle wash. We found one with a serious high pressure hose for the big rigs. We were defiantly overcharged but we had no choice and it was worth it for the experience we had out there and we would do it all over again.

7 February 2012

153 Miles of Dirt

Uyuni- Tupazi Bolivia

Beautiful desert riding again today. Dirt, washboard road for 150 miles. We will never complain about the washboard in Idaho again. Every dirt road I’ve been on in Idaho is better than this one. Huge washboard here. Paul said his eyeballs were rattling. Believe it or not this road is a Bolivian National hwy. Only 10 percent of roads in Bolivia are paved. I’ve never seen any place that resembles Utah as much as southern Bolivia. I’m not sure, but I am guessing that maybe this is the exact opposite parallel as Utah?? The landscape was so beautiful every bump, wash board, and river crossing was worth it. One thing they don’t have in Utah was the Giant Condors soaring over the red rock cliffs!!

PICTURES

Inside the Silver Mine in Potosi. We found our way out of the city this morning with no problems. The ride today was pretty nice. We had just about no rain for the whole day. Today we are on the most (major) highway in Bolivia. Hwy. 1. Well lets say what we have seen from over our handle bars today. First there was lots and lots of dead dogs. Then there were farmers cleaning off there sacks of carrots by walking on the sacks in the ditch water. Oh and then there was a full size bus coming at us with no windshield or windows at all. The drivers were all bundled up. It looked really funny. And the last thing we saw that was interesting was a fuel truck with a blown out tire in the rear that was smoking heavily. He was going slow as if he knew he had a blow out but didn’t really care. We passed that truck in hurry.

Upon arriving in Oruro we ran across two others that were on Moto. tour. They flagged us over to have a chat. Rob was on a Tennere 660 and Joe was on a DR 650. They were from New Zealand and have been on tour for 2 months. They were getting a local Bolivian motorcycle enthusiast to go fill up there gas can so didn’t have to pay the 2.5 times more for the fuel. ( As foreigners here in Bolivia we have to pay a lot more for the fuel. This is thanks to the bordering countries coming over to smuggle fuel back to their country. So us on motos. are caught in the loop hole. This really sucks for us. Most gas station wont even give you gas at all. It takes too much time just to find fuel here. We don’t really care about paying the surcharge. We just want GAS!! Its one of the few things that we cant do without. Now we have learned to find our gas the night before so we don’t ride around all morning wasting our time getting on the road.) After about 5 times to the gas station they refused to fill the gas can for him anymore. They still did not have enough fuel in their tanks and would have to deal with it in the morning. It is also illegal for them to fill gas into any kind of a can here in Bolivia. Some will do it for you; but most will not. We fill our gas bags out of our tank before we go fill up at the station. Camille and I had dinner that night with Rob and Joe. We were heading in the opposite directions so we looked at maps over dinner and exchanged some info.

Oruro-Potosi (13,300 ft.) 198 miles

Today we were riding at very high elevations once again. Between 12,000 and 16,000 ft. It rained on us just about all day long today. Its amazing that it can be so so cold and still raining. There was one long stretch when the rain turned to hail. Pretty good size hail at that. I would say about marble size and at this elevation there is Nothing. Nowhere to get out of it and hide. No trees,no buildings. Nothing!! All you could really do is just keep riding, but at a much slower speed. Then it got to the point that the hail accumulated on the road so much that vehicles were sliding off into the ditch. Luckily Camille and I do have some experience riding on icy roads so we were OK. Oh and then there was the lightning storm. Its not the best feeling when you see the lightning storm ahead and your heading right into it. Again we are about the highest thing out here on the road. I thought to myself “ At least we have rubber under us right”. As you may be able to tell today was a long very cold day. Yes we also needed gas today and we were in the middle of nowhere and the station would not budge at all and refused to give us anything. Luckily they told us of a house around the corner that was sell it out of jugs. Good thing because Camilles shooting star would not have made it to Potosi. Sorry no photos. from today.
